LOGOGRAPHERS
The title of the project and its main conceptual axis refer to the Greek logographers. They were the first chroniclers who, in ancient Greece, collected stories and legends from far-away lands and used them to build their narratives. Their works did not distinguish between documented history and fiction; the oral tradition of the local communities they visited served as a basis for their literary works that included myths, legends passed down through generations, and historical facts alike. The logographers told their stories thus building specific genius loci and changing the awareness and the image of world for the audience.
The underlying concept of the Logographers project is the idea of meeting, conversation, cooperation, but above all exchange of views concerning the modern visual arts. The Greek logographers will be an inspiration for the project participants; their actions will be freely interpreted by artists invited to the Contemporary Art Gallery in Opole. The participants, each arriving from a different part of Europe, will bring the experiences, subjective impressions, fascinations for the places they have visited / seen in their lives, to share them with the audience and other participants of the project. During their artistic stay in Opole the artists will use the tools provided by the modern visual arts to create new legends and stories about the cities and geographic / virtual spaces they've seen, and the places they inhabit daily.
An important element of an artistic residency in Opole will be the regular meetings with the local community and interaction with artists from the Opole region at a special meeting place. Every meeting will be connected with a presentation of experiences and impressions from a specific place in the world, each time by a different artist - project participant.
In telling their stories about the far-away places the artists will also use the logographic technique - a method involving quick writing down of the spoken text, where several persons take turns to write down several words, which are later recreated as a whole. Naturally, the specific nature of this record will be a matter of individual decision as each of the participants will be free to choose the form and the means of artistic expression. The meetings will allow for a free flow of comments, information and inspiration between the author and other participants.
The logographic technique will be used to create "chronicles of stories & events", which will be shown as an exhibition at he Gallery of Contemporary Art in Opole. They will be the results of the work of the artists addressing the concepts of journey, being inspired by a place, legend, fictitiousness of the present. The artists will communicate using video arts, audio arts, photography, installations, performances, drawings, creating "chronicles" in continuous reference to the work of the Greek logographers. The works will be ephemeral in character and will be disassembled following the completion of the project. This will turn the gallery into an open workshop, a laboratory of thought and creation unburdened with ready formulas, open to the audience and their impressions.

Tytuł projektu i jego główna oś koncepcyjna odnosi się do logografów jońskich. Byli to pierwsi kronikarze, którzy w starożytnej Grecji stali się kolekcjonerami opowieści i legend z odległych krain. Na podstawie tych przekazów budowali oni swoje wypowiedzi. W ich twórczości nie istniała granica między udokumentowaną historią a fikcją; przekaz ustny odwiedzanych przez nich, lokalnych społeczności stanowił kanwę ich twórczości literackiej, gdzie obok siebie istniały mitologiczne zjawiska, legendy przekazywane z pokolenia na pokolenie oraz fakty z historii. Logografowie snuli opowieści, budując tym samym swoiste genius loci i zmieniając świadomość i obraz świata odbiorców.
Greccy Logografiowie będą inspiracją dla uczestników
projektu, którzy w swobodny sposób zinterpretują schemat działań tych
antycznych kronikarzy. Artyści zaproszeni do Galerii Sztuki Współczesnej w
Opolu podczas pobytu studyjnego stworzą „nowe legendy i historie” o miejscach i
przestrzeniach geograficznych / wirtualnych, które kiedyś widzieli lub w
których żyją na co dzień. Każdy z uczestników projektu prezentując swoje
doświadczenia związane z podróżowaniem i budowaniem mitów będzie jednocześnie
inspiracją i obiektem analizy dla pozostałych twórców. W trakcie tych
opowieści o odległych miejscach artyści będą się także posługiwać techniką
logografii – czyli metodą szybkiego zapisywania tekstów mówionych. System
notacyjny jaki obiorą sobie artyści będzie dowolny. Artyści wypowiedzą się w takich mediach jak sztuka wideo, audio,
fotografia, instalacje, rysunek, performance, tworząc „kroniki” w ciągłym
nawiązaniu do działalności Logografów Jońskich. Galeria dzięki takiemu
działaniu stanie się otwartym warsztatem pracy, laboratorium myśli i tworzenia
nieobciążonego schematami, w ciągłej otwartości na odbiorcę i jego wrażenia.
Powstała w ten sposób „kronika opowieści i
zdarzeń” prezentowana będzie w formie wystawy w Galerii Sztuki Współczesnej w
Opolu. Będą to efekty pracy artystów odpowiadające na zagadnienia podróży, inspiracji
miejscem, legendą, fikcją współczesności.
